Ocular Services

  • Consultation

Consultations are free. If you are unsure about your needs, make an appointment to see us. Please call ahead as our hours may vary.

  • Prosthetic Eyes and Scleral Shells

Regular prosthetic eyes are worn by patients with enucleated or eviscerated sockets. Patients with a blind, disfigured eye can have a scleral shell made to cover the appearance of the natural eye. The prosthesis should be replaced when it no longer fits properly or if the material develops defects over time. Most insurances will cover replacements every 3-5 years.

  • Enlargements and Reductions

Adjustments such as enlargements and reductions are included in the warranty period if the prosthesis is made in our office. When these adjustments are medically necessary past the warranty period, we can work with your insurance to cover the procedure. We do not perform such adjustments on prostheses made by another office.

  • Color Change

A certain number of cosmetic changes are included in the warranty period if the prosthesis is made in our office. This procedure is not covered by insurances. After the warranty period expires, patients can self-pay for this service. We do not make such adjustments for prostheses made elsewhere.

  • Polishes

Routine maintenance is important to the socket health and we recommend having the prosthesis polished every six months. We will polish acrylic prostheses made anywhere.

  • Conformers

Custom conformers are clear acrylic shapes made to fit the socket. Their functions vary. Conformers fulfill the functional needs of a regular prosthesis but they are more cost effective because they do not have the appearance of a realistic eye. Patients who may need conformers include infants and young children going through a growth spurt, patients who are prone to losing their regular prosthesis, patients with contracting sockets, and special cases after surgery.

  • Peg Fitting

If you have a pegged implant, we are able to fit the prosthesis to the peg. In some cases, extra components are necessary to complete the fitting. Some insurances do not cover this procedure.

  • Duplicate Prostheses

Some patients may prefer to have more than one prosthesis as a backup. Others like to get creative with the colors on their second eye. Unless special circumstances deem it medically necessary, insurances do not pay for duplicates. We offer this as a self-pay option at an affordable rate if the prosthesis to be duplicated was made in our office within a year. The rate is higher if the prosthesis to be duplicated was made elsewhere or more than a year ago at our office. We do not adjust the shape in a duplicate but we can paint it to your preference.

  • Costume Prostheses

We can make costume eyes. Rates depend on the complexity of the project. Our patients who are in need of medically necessary prostheses are the priority so the lead time varies. Museums or forensic sculptors that need hyper realistic prosthetic eyes can contact us.
